Train Cake

So anyone that knows me knows that I like to dream big. Most of the time I just dream. For Zac's 1st birthday I really wanted to do a fun cake. So weeks ago I started plotting about what kind of cake to make. I finally settled on making a train cake. I found a 3D mold for a train engine and figured worst case scenerio I couldn't get it to work and I would buy a cake from Costco. Well luckily I was able to get the cake cooked and out of the pan. I have the best mom in the world who helped me make this dream come true. She sacrificed her entire day off to help me get it frosted. The picture above we frosted in about 1 1/2 hours and then had to take a 3 hour break for Zac's naptime and my work. When we got back to finish the cake for some reason the top weighed too much and the engine had started to lean to the left. Woops! Guess I needed to put some sort of support in a 3D cake. Live and learn. Instead we propped it back up with another cake.
I have always wanted to learn how to work with Fondant on cakes, so crazy me decided to try it on this one. The train cars and round cake with Zac's name on it have the fondant. I was terrified that I was not going to be able to do it. Luckily a few days ago I found some ready made fondant at Michaels, so all I had to do was roll it out and put it on the cake. It was actually really easy to work with once I got started.

The finished product. Turned out ok for my first crazy cake project. Thanks again to my wonderful mom for helping me create this cake for my baby boy. Can't believe that he turns one this week.
